Cheer Pheasant Conservation Training

On November 6–7, 2025, a specialized pheasant conservation training was successfully conducted at Dhawalagiri Secondary School in Muna, Myagdi, aimed at empowering Eco-club students with the knowledge to protect Nepal’s unique avian biodiversity. Located at an elevation of 1,950 meters, the school hosted 53 students from Grades 7 to 10 for a two-day intensive session. The program provided a comprehensive overview of animal systematics and avian biology, emphasizing the ecological and cultural significance of birds. By exploring the roles of birds as pollinators, pest controllers, and scavengers, the training highlighted how these species are indispensable to human life and healthy ecosystems.

The core of the curriculum focused on the critical threats facing birds in Nepal, with a specialized spotlight on the globally threatened Cheer Pheasant. Students engaged in deep discussions regarding habitat loss, climate change, and the legal protections afforded to these rare birds, including the strict penalties for hunting or illegal captivity. Through interactive posters and feedback sessions, the 26 boys and 27 girls in attendance explored their specific roles as local conservation ambassadors. The training concluded by challenging the students to take active responsibility for the survival of the Cheer Pheasant, ensuring that the youth of Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality are equipped to lead future environmental stewardship efforts.
