Bird Conservation Awareness Program at Gyanodaya Secondary School Dhorpatan

November 10-11, 2025. An intensive bird conservation awareness program was conducted at Gyanodaya Secondary School in Dhorpatan Municipality-7, Bobang, Baglung, to strengthen the environmental leadership of local students. Situated at an elevation of 1,790 meters, the school hosted a total of 112 participants from Grades 8 to 10, including 47 boys and 65 girls. The training provided a foundational understanding of avian biology, beginning with a broad overview of the animal kingdom and the unique characteristics of vertebrates. Students explored the critical role birds play in the ecosystem—acting as essential pollinators, seed dispersers, and natural pest controllers—while learning about the diverse habitats ranging from wetlands to high-altitude forests that define the Baglung landscape.

The program placed a specialized focus on the cheer pheasant, a globally threatened species, to educate students on its legal status, habitat requirements, and the specific threats it faces in Nepal, such as habitat fragmentation and illegal hunting. By addressing major conservation challenges like climate change and the over-exploitation of forest products, the session empowered students to identify their roles in protecting biodiversity. The event concluded with interactive question-and-answer sessions and feedback collection, ensuring that these young ambassadors from Bobang are well-equipped to advocate for the survival of Nepal's pheasant species and the preservation of their natural heritage.
